Polymer Clay Santa Figurines

I know I said I was done with Santas for the season but I forgot the Santa figurines I made.  I can’t ever seem to totally focus on one creative outlet and a few years ago I went crazy with making Santas.

(all pictures will enlarge when clicked)

They are mixed media sculptures.  The body is made on a wire armature with paper mache, the hands and face and all the accessories are made with polymer clay which is sculpted and then baked to harden.  I used no paint, all the color comes from blending the clay.  The beard is mohair.

The clothing is mostly felt and various trims.

Here is his bag of toys

The deer that Santa is feeding is a wire frame and polymer clay.  The apple stems are very small twigs.

Santa doesn’t always wear red….here he is in his blue hiking clothes.

This santa has a basket of toys…I made the basket using thread and jute.

Santa needs at least a few elves

Santa also likes to decorate trees

And make snowmen

And put on his work clothes and work on growing Poinsettias

This Santa has a beard that is also made of clay.  He is the first one I made.

After I got all of the Santa figurines out I needed a place to display them so I had to put up a few more trees

So now I am really really really done decorating!

Something “quilty” next time

Until then  Merry Christmas

Santa Trees

After I finished the large tree I decided I needed to use all of my santa ornaments, they filled up 2 more trees.

I have been collecting Santa ornaments for years, most of them have been gifts.

This tree is 6 1/2″ and rather narrow so it fits perfectly in the hall.  I used all the smaller santas here.  There are some very interesting ornaments on this tree. (click pictures to enlarge)

I had enough santas left to do another tree

And My favorite Santa of all is also on display

As long as I can remember this santa was a decoration at home.  My mom bought it at the grocery store rolled up in a tube and every year it got hung on the back sliding glass door.  Over time it got very worn around the edges so I cut off the edging (It was like a large poster) and taped it to cardboard and then covered it with clear plastic.  Then it was displayed on mom’s front porch for a few more years.  It got worn out again and before mom threw it away she asked if I wanted it.  So I cut out a piece of plywood and glued it on and covered it with a few coats of polyurethane.  and added some lights around it.  Very nostalgic to still have Santa.

So I have Santa and Santa tree #3, and a rack full of quilts all displayed together

I think that is just about it for Santas to put out for Christmas.  It has been a while since I have had them all out at once…I had forgotten how many there are!!

Happy Decorating!
