Tobacco Flag Quilt Progress

Today I decided to spend some time working on the tobacco flag quilt.  (See the posts here and here for more information)

I have six rows finished (about a dozen to go).  I am adding the decorative red hand stitching as I add each row of flags.  I am also enjoying looking at the interesting flags from the past.

Trimming the flags to equal sizes takes the most time.

I am also having fun with my new old singer 301 sewing machine

Here is the stack of flags yet to add.

I find it difficult to work on the same project every day…..I call it OCQD…obsessive compulsive quilting disease.  I work on a project untill I get an itch to do something else and then go back to another project a few days later and seemingly never finish anything.  I really do finish things, once a project reaches about the 75% done stage I work on it almost non stop untill it is done.

This one has a way to go before that stage!

Happy Quilting

Tim

    Looking good!
I can’t work on just one project either! I normally work on what inspires me that day, I try not to have more then 4 projects going at once though…combination of applique or piecing or hand quilting…

Right now I am trying to not work on more than 2 projects but I know that will change soon. I get bored working on the same thing all the time and need variety too. I don’t know how some do it that work on one until it is finished.

you have great will power if you can stick to just 2 projects!….but I have seen the 2 you are working on in you blog and I think they are so great that they would keep my attention!

Uummm….We all have OCQD !!! I have projects stacked in bins on my cutting table and work on one at a time and when I’m tired of working on that one it goes to the bottom of the stack and then I start with the next one at the top, etc. Keeps one busy for sure! But I don’t think any of us can really work on just one project…….LOL

This is the neatest quilt you are working on at present. So are these panels? And where on earth did you find them? What a great quilt this will be.

    Take care,
    Sue

all the flags are antiques (from about 1910) and I got them on eBay…..they were premiums that were included with cigarette packages back then and people saved them up and and sometimes made them into things like quilts. its a fun bit of history and I always like the hisoty part of quilts

Glad Im not the only one with OCQD!
      Thanks

Tim, I know that you said that these panels are from around 1910, I have an embroidered sampler that was done sometime during or just after WWII. It has LOTS of flags on it, some I know, some I can only guess at. My question is, if I could get a really good picture of it and email it to you, would you be willing to do a little detective work? See if any of the flags remained the same & identify them for me? I would love to know a little more about this piece of mine-it currently resides in an acid free box wrapped in acid free tissue, so getting a picture wouldn’t be a problem (whereas getting a GOOD one is questionable considering the photographer)!

I would be happy to take a look at a picture and do some detective work for you….it would be great fun!
