sunday updates…pyramids, wheel of fortune, storage

Yesterday I posted about the Wheel of Fortune quilt top.  I was asked for a close up of the fabric so here it is

The blocks are about 19 inches

the seam allowances are so narrow!  almost non-existent

The printed fabric is not one I have seen before so it is hard for me to take a stab at the date, and solid fabrics are not a big help in dating fabric either.  Id love to hear what you think.  I’m guessing 20′s but could be 30+ years off.

I had to get the top out of storage to get some close up pictures.  It is not that hard for me to find a top in storage.  I have 15 tops in each storage tub and the outside of the box has a picture of all the tops in the box.

I will have to count the boxes some time to see how many tops there are….more than 10 boxes.

I made some more progress on the Thousand pyramids top…8 rows done

It helps to lay it out on the floor.  I can line it up with the floor boards and see if it is still straight…so far so good.

Yesterday I added a Kay Starr Song for the  Wheel of Fortune top….today Jo Stafford for the Pyramids

Happy Quilting

Tim

Oh Tim, that print is fabulous! As is Miss Kay Starr, whom I am listening to singing Wheel of Fortune on youtube as I type this. Wow, I didn’t really get this top until the close-ups – LOVE IT! And good for you, cataloging your tops – I have labels on my shoe boxes but not photos, which is the way the fashionistas supposedly do it. When Andrew and I were looking at apartments we were in one that housed a woman who evidently did the charity ball circuit – she had photos on all her rows of shoe boxes, and Andrew was just amazed (and appalled). But it’s the best way to go.

The color seems very 1880/1890s, but the printing does not. At that time, printing seemed a little more detailed and much more precise. Not much brown was used in the 30s, although it is possible. My guess would actually be 40s or 50s, because we were over the Easter egg colors by then, there were some cool geometrics, and the printing was often slightly out of register. I could be wrong, but that’s what I thought when I saw the print up close.

I do think the color is the hard part….that brown is not a common 20-30′s color…as you say it is almost an 1890′s color…but the feel of the fabric (texture and hand) is more 30′s….or 40′s so I think you might be right on…whatever the date I love it

Great storage system….so easy to see what’s in there. You had me looking up Kay Starr – a 1952 recording. I listen to Pandora while computing… and added her name to a ‘list’ which provided hours of nice easy listening of similar artists along with her. My guess for time period…50.s – 60′s. Read about brown in Clues in the Calico.

How great to have hours of music!…sure beats the TV!
I did read the clues book and I still have no real positive feeling about date…but 50′s or 60′s makes sence…..but I know there were browns before then (just not as popular) When I qet it quilted I will have my Appraiser guess at the date as well

That Thousand Pyramid quilt is really looking good! I think I’ve been bitten by the same bug as you… Today I purchased off eBay an old quilt top, huge, with fabrics I recognize from the ’60s, when I was a teen. Not quite antique, but certainly considered vintage by now…. I love your storage system. Just another indication of your reverance and love for the old fabrics and appreciation of the quilters’ work. Thanks! Makes me feel good!

      thanks!
glad you found an eBay treasure….but be careful..eBay purchasing can take on a life of its own!!…but those tops do need good homes..I know yours is in good hands!

I did not read the other comments. So this may be a repeat. I would say 50-60s. The pattern etc, plus my own stash leads me that way. Either way great top!!

I am so impressed with your storage system! What a wonderful trunk show you could put on with all those treasures!

  7. Carla says:

Wow love your storage systems, but am jealous of all the tops you have. I am glad however that they are now living with someone who definitely will take care of them and appreciate them. Wouldn’t it be neat if they could talk, I would love to be a little bird listening in on that conversation.

you will be busy quilting for quite a few years, lucky you! Of course now I want to see pictures of all the 10 boxes to see the tops you do own! I like to buy quilt blocks to use for my quilt patterns maybe I need to move up to quilt tops but your right it, ebay can become obsessive!
