“Rustic” log cabin variation

log cabin variation

I will be teaching classes all day Friday (pictures to follow) so I am posting tonight about a new top that I could not resist.

It is another eBay top and It was $31.00  I just love the bold contrast between the log cabin blocks and the red bands.  I can see why it was never quilted.  It is a bit beyond “quilting out” the bumps.

Some of the blocks are pieced in with one row of logs almost all sewn into the seams

and some look pretty good

I think I can fix that by separating the blocks from the bands and pressing them and then re-attaching.  I don’t want it to be perfect, I love the rustic look, but I do want it to be quiltable.   I don’t think I would ever want to wear any clothes that this quilter made.

This one looks to be early 1900′s and it is a great size, 90″ x 90″.  This one doesn’t seem to call for very elaborate quilting so It should go pretty fast, and since it just arrived today I am still pretty excited about it….If you ask me today I would say this is the next one I will work on….but that can change at any time!

Hexagonal Star Quilt Top

Hexagonal star quilt top

I purchased another vintage quit top.  It is a pattern that I did not have so I couldn’t resist.

It is not the largest top at only 74″ x 76″ but I will add a border and make it full-sized.

The thing that I find interesting about the top is the variety of fabrics.  At first glance I would say they are all 30′s and 40′s prints, but looking closer I find several that are much older.    A quilt top can only be as old as its newest piece so I do think it was made in the 40′s but someone had some much older fabrics in the scrap bag.  Click pictures to enlarge.
