Fan Blocks Become a Quilt Top

Fans-wheels 008

Sometimes I just have to work until it is done.  I started playing with these vintage fan blocks on Friday.

3-5-13 033

And today I have a finished quilt top.  It finished at 82″ square.  All the fabric except the fans is new, but I think it coordinates with the vintage fabric.

I did this one all on the machine so it went pretty fast. (but it WILL be hand quilted)  It still needs a good pressing, but you can get the idea of how it looks

Here are a bunch of pictures (click to enlarge)

So what is the name of the pattern?  I based it on the pattern that you probably know as New York Beauty…here is an antique from the Quilt Index

It has the same 9 block layout but with different cornerstones, and sashing, and different fans (no points)  so what pattern does that make it…I’ll call it my own original ….I can never follow a pattern anyway.  I can’t have any fun copying someone elses work.  But I can take other peoples Ideas and change them.

I have a pile of scraps leftover and still a few of the fans that I didn’t use….I will have to make them into a little quilt or 2 for AAQI

here are pictures of the scraps and a few fans.

Now that I have that out of my system I can get back to some hand quilting.

Happy Quilting

Tim

Amazing once again! I love the way you seem to dive in head first! As Larry the Cable Guy always says “Git her done!”

  2. Jim Smith says:

Definitely a very nice piece of art.

I just love it! Always a treat to open your blog!!

Awesome quilt! I can imagine the incredible quilting that you will attach to this quilt especially in the white center areas!

That’s just lovely and I like your interpretation of the NY beauty quilt.
I can’t wait to see how you quilt it.
Always a pleasure to look at your quilting. Pics of your doggy are so much fun. Thank you

Great quilttop! Love the extra arc in the fan. The pieced sahing gives it so much movement…you piece almost as fast as you quilt!

  7. Barb says:

It’s beautiful! Love the setting, and so much easier than all those points. I love “updated” traditional quilts that still look like quilts. Very inspiring.

Amazing, great choice of pattern, perfect for the fans. The corner blocks caught my eye, it that a modified drunkards path?

    • timquilts says:

I cut a square of the appropriate size and then makd a pattern for the curves….cut off the corners of the squares and cut out the curves and sewed them together….so I dont know if it has a name but the curve is done like a drunkards path block, but there are 4 of them rather than a single curve….but it would have worked to do a standard drunkards path block and put 4 together

  9. Love what you did with the fans. It’s very “modern” and fresh looking. I’ll have to file that border idea in my bag o’ tricks!

    • timquilts says:

Thanks…it was an easy one to do because it is just a lot of straight stitches….the fans were all different sizes so that took some adjusting….but the border was easy

It is fascinating how the blocks have taken on a new personality.
I think the top now has an ancient Egptian look. Gai

How fun….I can see what you are saying…I must admit that was not the plan….but it does sort of have an Egyptian feel…very interesting how different eyes see different thing

Wonderful quilt top! I think what I like the most is the stripey look to the fan blocks and of course the lay-out is amazing.:) Great work as usual!

    • timquilts says:

Thanks!…I have had those fan blocks for a few years and never was sure what I wanted to do with them….I am glad that I waited to be inspired rather than doing a standard fan block quilt

  12. Cathi says:

I am so impressed with how quickly you have put this together! And all that open space for you to work your magic with the quilting – can’t wait to see what you’ll do there.

    • timquilts says:

Thanks Cathi…It went fast because I was on a roll with it and just kept on working for hours at a time….but I could have been a lot more accurate with it….but the quilting will do a lot to hide the flaws

Superb ! – love how you joined them. You had a great vision for these blocks.

  14. Oh Tim!! It’s absolutely gorgeous! Have you thought about how you’re going to quilt it?

  15. Diane says:

ooooo such a great job! Impressed here in Charlotte!

  16. What a great original design! Your eyes just wander all over the quilt taking in all the wonderful fabrics.

Thanks!…I bought a bundle of fat quarters last August at the AQS show in Grand Rapids…at the time I had no idea what I would do with them…..but They worked out great for this one

  17. Karin Peirce says:

What a great looking quilt, you really did a great job on assembling it.
It feels quite different to me from a New York Beauty, but it certainly is a beauty.

  18. Salley says:

Sensational. Surely some little fairies helped you get that up so quickly?

  19. Tim, what a lovely quilt top! The setting is perfect. It looks totally vintage, great job!

  20. Just LOVE all these vintage tops, and I just can’t believe how much you can get accomplished in such a short period of time. I’ve been curious, what kind of sewing machine do you use? I’d love to “convert” you to treadle since you obviously share my love of the vintage. ;)

    • timquilts says:

I have 2 machines that I use…..My favorite is a vintage singer 301 which I believe it the best machine ever made…..with a vintage cabinet…..love it!! and if I need to do any fancy stitches I have a very basic Kenmore that I bought in about 1990….nothing computerized to break down

It’s beautiful-looks like an amazing display of tiles. Just recently found your site and love your handquilting. I envy your vision for your quilts!

I would love to hear from you!
