Tumbling Blocks and Log Cabin Progress

I purchased a tumbling blocks top recently.  Tumbling blocks is one of my favorite patterns.

This one is a small top at only 51″ x 64″  so It might become the center of a larger quilt.  It might have been intended as a crib quilt but I think it is a bit dark for that.

It needs a good pressing and some attention to the piecing to clean up the points but I love the fabric.  It looks a bit pink in the picture but it is really brown.

It is hand pieced, not the best work but I can live with it

I always find it interesting that the pattern looks different depending on how you look at it.  When I look at this picture I see a star

Here I see the blocks

Sometimes it looks like rows of diamonds.

Some of the matching points are pretty good

some of the pieces are a bit puckered

A good pressing will help a lot.

I am making progress on the log cabin hand quilting.  I finished one row of cabins and 1/2 of one of the red bands

I am having great fun quilting this one, just making up the pattern as I go

I am using Hobb’s Tuscany Wool batting and it really quilts easily and shows off the quilting

It might be hard to tell but the thread is black YIL cotton, and I am using a #10 Bohin needle

I want to get back to it and finish that red row today!

Happy Quilting

Interesting quilt! Does it have polished cotton in it? It almost looks like it and I can see the stars, too, but they are a bit hard to see vs. the blocks.

Love your fun quilting! You’re turning an everyday log cabin quilt into a head turner! The quilting is a sneaky surprise if someone looks at it from a distance and then wanders up close to check out the details. Great work as usual.

I really enjoy your blog. Your quilts are beautiful and the history is great. I just discovered wool batting and love it. I was amazed at how easy it quilts small stitches. I’m even happier now that I found queen size for $25.99! Happy stitches
