Quilting Away

Happy New Year!    And I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday season!

I posted this on Facebook but want to share it here as well.

“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.

Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something.

So that’s my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody’s ever made before. Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough, or it isn’t perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.

Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, Do it.

Make your mistakes, next year and forever.”
― Neil Gaiman

It has been COLD here in Michigan….and quite a bit of snow, in fact there was a winter weather advisory on Christmas day so I stayed home rather than making the  drive  to visit the family.

It has been below zero for days …..

I made a new snowflake quilt.  A wall hanging size.

I also made a video of how I did it

I have been feeling like I needed to finish a full-sized quilt….so I looked through all my many (hundreds) of vintage quilt tops and picked one to work on

I believe it was made in the 30’s but it is hard to say for sure.  The applique is done with buttonhole or blanket stitch and the main fabric is a heavy weight muslin.    Teddy and I spent some time thinking about how to quilt it.

I felt that this one really needed to be somewhat simple and traditional …. I am doing the quilting by machine (my hands just aren’t up to a lot of hand quilting yet) but wanted something that would also be appropriate to do by hand and look like it fits the quilt.

Here is what I came up with.

Once I had that worked out it started to go pretty fast.

Teddy sits in his chair next to the machine and supervises.

I also made a video of stitching this one

I am just a bit over half-finished with it, I need to fins some fabric for binding that will match the green or the pink.

I have next/final procedure on the 11th ….. after that I hope to get back to blogging more frequently !
Happy New Year and Happy Quilting

Another Snowflake Quilt

I decided to make a snowflake quilt.    I started by cutting a large snowflake that would fit this piece of fabric (about 44 inches square)

I traced the outline onto the fabric and then layered it for quilting.
